Custom Jewelry Tooling: Mold, CAD and Reorder Control

Custom jewelry tooling arrangements should identify what is being developed, what the charge covers, who will hold it and how it may be used for reorders. Record molds, dies, master models and CAD deliverables separately where they apply. A tooling payment alone should not be treated as a complete agreement about ownership, exclusivity or file delivery.

Agree these points before development starts. The required tooling depends on the design and production route; some changes to existing styles may not need a new dedicated mold.

List the Development Deliverables

ItemPoint to clarify
CAD or technical fileFormat, deliverable scope and approved version
Master or prototypePurpose, custody and relation to the final sample
Mold, die or fixtureIdentification, charge and product scope
Logo tooling or artworkApproved file, size and location
Reorder referenceWhich drawing and sample define repeat production

Ask which charges are one-time development costs and which may recur after a change. A line labeled “mold fee” may not include the same work in every quotation. Request an itemized explanation rather than comparing the label alone.

Confirm Custody, Use and Transfer Arrangements

Discuss who stores the tooling, who may use it, and what happens if you stop ordering or change suppliers. Also address maintenance, damage, storage duration and any release or transfer conditions. Keep the response with the project agreement.

Physical custody and permission to use a tool are different questions. Tooling arrangements also need to be considered separately from rights in the design and digital files. Where these rights are important, obtain an agreement suited to the parties and jurisdiction rather than assuming an email payment record settles them.

Protect Confidential Design Information

Share the information needed for feasibility while agreeing how confidential drawings and brand files will be handled. WIPO’s trade-secret guidance identifies reasonable confidentiality measures, including agreements, as relevant to protecting secret business information.

Clarify who may receive files if specialists are involved. Do not assume a reference image grants permission to reproduce another brand’s design. Use original work or designs you are authorized to develop, and keep authorization records where relevant.

Link Tooling Changes to Sample Approval

A revised thickness, shape, stone setting or logo position may affect tooling. Ask what needs to change and whether another sample is required. Identify the old and new versions so the previous drawing is not accidentally used in bulk production.

For reorders, confirm the reference version, tooling condition and any component or process changes. Retaining a mold does not by itself establish that the new batch will match the earlier sample. Material, finishing and assembly also need control.

Discuss the Project with Yanluo Jewelry

Yanluo Jewelry supports custom jewelry and OEM/ODM inquiries. Send a drawing or authorized reference with dimensions, material, finish and quantities. Ask whether new tooling is needed and request the associated deliverables and commercial arrangements.

Treat low initial quantity, dedicated tooling and exclusive use as separate requirements to review. Their feasibility and costs depend on the product. Confirm the sample stage and manufacturing schedule after the scope is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does paying a mold fee automatically give me every design file?

Do not assume that. Identify CAD files, formats, prototypes and tooling as separate deliverables in the project arrangement.

Is custody the same as ownership?

No. Discuss where tooling is held and the rights to use, access or transfer it as separate questions.

Does every custom logo need a private mold?

Not necessarily. The method depends on the item and marking process. Ask what development or tooling is actually required.

What should a reorder record include?

Include the approved drawing and sample versions, material, finish, tooling reference and any accepted changes.

Can Yanluo quote from a reference image?

A reference can start the feasibility review. Dimensions, construction, quantity and authorized design details may be needed before final tooling and production terms are confirmed.
