Is 0.3 Micron PVD Plating a Real Standard for Jewelry?

Short answer: No. Decorative PVD plating on jewelry is normally applied at 0.03-0.08 µm, with 0.03-0.05 µm as the mainstream production standard. A claim of “0.3 micron and above” for PVD is misleading. It usually describes traditional electroplating (water plating) thickness, or results from unit and process confusion. Why “0.3 Micron PVD” Is Wrong

1. It Confuses PVD with Electroplating

Traditional electroplating (water plating) deposits thicker, softer layers and commonly runs at 0.1-0.3 µm, with some industrial finishes above 1 µm. When a vendor says “0.3 micron and above,” they are almost always quoting electroplating thickness and mislabeling the process as PVD. 2. It Inflates the Real Standard by 6-10x

Decorative PVD on stainless steel jewelry is a thin-film technology. Published standards cluster around 0.03-0.08 µm. A “0.3 micron” claim is 6-10x above the normal band, so either the process is not PVD or the number is a marketing figure.

3. It Ignores the Physics of PVD

PVD is deposited atom by atom in a vacuum, which creates an extremely dense, hard, and strongly bonded film. Because the film bonds at the molecular level, it does not need thickness for protection. Excess thickness increases internal stress, which leads to cracking, flaking, and delamination. Kesheen specifically notes that going too thick weakens adhesion and raises the risk of peeling.

  • “PVD plating 0.3-1.0 micron” -> Almost always electroplating. Real decorative PVD cannot be specified that way.
  • “Our PVD is thicker than the market” -> Either a unit error or a description of another process.
  • “0.3 micron gold PVD” -> If it is genuine PVD, it is at the high end of the decorative band and costs accordingly; if the price is low, the process is probably electroplating.
  • “Same as PVD, water plating process” -> The vendor is admitting electroplating. PVD and water plating are not interchangeable.
  • “Thickness tested by our own machine” -> Ask which machine and which standard. Credible factories name the standard and the instrument.

Why the Base Metal Matters: 304 vs 316L

PVD thickness claims also ignore the substrate, which is where durability actually starts. On stainless steel jewelry, the two common bases are 304 and 316L:

  • 304 stainless steel contains roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, with no molybdenum. It is the standard economic choice for fashion jewelry and performs well with quality PVD at 0.03-0.05 µm, passing roughly 48-96 hours of salt spray testing.
  • 316L stainless steel adds 2-3% molybdenum, which strengthens resistance to chlorides and salt. It typically passes 200-400+ hours of salt spray and releases less nickel (below 0.1 µg/cm²/week, versus 0.2-0.8 for 304). This makes 316L the premium substrate for PVD on higher-end lines.

  4. Compare with the decorative band. Claims far above 0.03-0.08 µm need documented proof.
  5. If the answer mentions “water plating,” “gold plating,” or “0.3-1.0 micron,” the vendor is describing electroplating, not PVD.
